Shaun: I’m in bed, my clothes on, my hands over my ears, but I can still hear the shouting and I can still hear the chanting, and I can still smell the smoke and I can still smell the petrol, I can still taste the foul burnt air and I can still taste the blood and I can still taste the dirt, I can still taste the blood and I can still taste the dirt –

I toss and I turn and I sob and I sob –

I can hear Parker downstairs, I can hear Parker whispering to Carolyn, whispering about what he saw, but he’s not telling her everything he saw, I can hear that he’s not telling her, and I can hear my granny snoring, just lightly, but she’s asleep and I hope she stays asleep for a long time.

It all happened too fast, and Anton leaving and Anton saying, ‘Come on, Shaun, man, get out of here, come on, man, this is not us,’ Anton shouting at me to come on, but I stayed, and it all happened too fast and then –

And then that big man Marlon and he’s telling me, ‘This way, young

’un, this way, yeah,’ and I’m following and I’m running, and there’s the smell of the smoke, the smell of the petrol, the feeling of bricks and rocks and stones in my hands, and I throw them, but I don’t see where they go, where they fall, and Marlon telling me, ‘This way, come on, all of you, yeah, heads down—’

I remember Marlon and I remember faces I don’t know, white and black, new faces, and I see Marlon looking and nodding, and pointing at me, and that’s when I go, and that’s when I see Parker and that’s when he sorts me out for the second time.

Now, in bed, I see Marlon pointing, I see Marlon nodding and I don’t know what it means.

I toss and I turn, I sweat and I shake.

That taste –

Blood and dirt, smoke and fuel –

Fear and hate –

I retch and I sleep.

I sleep –
